KEEPING CURRENT BLOG GUIDELINES

PURPOSE


Welcome to your blog, health library staff! Get the latest information in Continuing Education, Research, Reference, Project Updates, and Access Notes all in one convenient place.

The Keeping Current Blog was created to make information sharing easier, to combine a variety of communication platforms into one convenient tool, and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas amongst colleagues. The Keeping Current Blog Guidelines have been developed and implemented by the blog work team and will be reviewed on a regular basis and revised as necessary.

The Keeping Current Blog is located at http://healthlibrarystaff.blogspot.com. Blogger is the software used to create the blog www.blogger.com.

The blog managers reserve the right to edit blog content and labels to conform to our style guidelines and delete any misinformation or any inappropriate information.

BLOGGERS

Bloggers must be staff members of the University of Calgary Health Sciences Libraries – Health Sciences Library, Health Information Network, Health Knowledge Network or Canadian Virtual Health Library (Calgary). Access and writing privileges are granted by email invitation. Please contact one of the blog managers if you are having trouble accessing the blog.


ACCEPTABLE USE

The blog supports a Culture of Collaboration and Contribution. It is a U of C HSL/HIN-sponsored tool for use within the HSL/HIN and for outreach beyond the HSL/HIN. Lively opinion and commentary are welcome in blog posts. However, it is expected that blog postings will be professional and reflect well on the HSL/HIN. Bloggers are strongly encouraged to check facts, cite sources, present balanced views, acknowledge and correct errors, and check spelling and grammar before making a post live.All bloggers acknowledge receipt on registration of the blog acceptable use and copyright guidelines. Please be advised that all comments and suggestions can be anonymous and are moderated for clarity, brevity, and appropriateness. We do reserve the right to post as is, decline to post, or edit if comments that contain obscenities or otherwise lack civility and respect for any persons, groups, or the university.Links to related posts are encouraged, but bloggers should post original content rather than reposting entire items from other blogs or lists.


CONTENT BEST PRACTICES

All blog items must fall within one of the five blog categories (Access Notes, Continuing Education, Project Updates, Reference, and Research). If the item does not fit within one of these categories, it may not be an appropriate item for this blog. Blog posts may be text or video and images can be added if they are related to the content of the item. Instructions on entering a video have been posted in the blog.

Before entering a new post into the blog, check that the item has not already been posted. Every new post must have at least one of the category labels assigned to it (Access Notes, Continuing Education, Project Updates, Reference, Research). Additional labels may be also be added. Check the list of labels before creating a new label.

STYLE GUIDELINES

Spelling, punctuation, and other usage should conform to the University of Calgary Style Guide. For more library-specific style advice (such as proper formatting of vendor and database names), please refer to the Health Information Network Style Guide on the shared drive at R:\Knowledge-Centers\Workteam – Communications\Style-Guide\HIN-Style-Guide-ver6.doc.
The style guide is quite a good, and reasonably brief, document, and lists lots of good, U of C-specific examples, while the HINC style guide has all the proper spelling of vendor names, etc.
