August 17, 2011, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. (Eastern) - 11-12:30 MST

AcademyHealth’s Electronic Data Methods (EDM) Forum is a three-year grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to collect, synthesize, and share lessons learned from current projects using electronic clinical data for comparative effectiveness research (CER) and patient centered outcomes research (PCOR).

This session will highlight eleven research projects that are participating in the Forum. These projects are building infrastructure and methods for collecting and analyzing prospective electronic clinical data to advance the science of CER and PCOR, as well as improve the quality of clinical care and enhance clinical decision support.

Updates on four grant programs will be provided, including:
  1. the Prospective Outcome Systems using Patient-specific Electronic data to Compare Tests and therapies (PROSPECT) studies;
  2. the Enhanced Registries for Quality Improvement and CER;
  3. the Scalable Distributed Research Networks for CER; and
  4. the EDM Forum.
Panelists Dr. Peter Tarczy-Hornoch (University of Washington Medical Center), Dr. John Steiner (Kaiser Permanente Colorado), Dr. Adam Wilcox (Columbia University) will discuss the important scientific, organizational, clinical, technical, and data governance challenges related to implementing CER and PCOR. Dr. Erin Holve (AcademyHealth) will discuss the EDM Forum’s activities to synthesize lessons from the projects as well as engage stakeholders and disseminate the tools, techniques and findings from the projects to advance the science and application of CER and PCOR. The panelists will also address ways in which collaboration among projects will further the objective of building a learning health care system. Dr. Gurvaneet Randhawa (AHRQ) will moderate the panel.
