Hello,
A few notes for the week…
Fall Back
We will gain an hour
next Saturday night (I always love that extra hour of sleep!).
The clocks in HSL will
likely display incorrectly on Sunday (one hour ahead), however an Archibus
request will be sent in to request the re-set.
The electronic door
system will be adjusted appropriately.
MCCQ Exams
The Medical Council of
Canada Qualifying exams are scheduled in the Commons Monday through Thursday
from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. The room will
be available for others in the evening. This
will limit access to SPSS this week that is only available on our Commons
workstations.
Room 1459 is also being
used Monday and Tuesday only for the MCCQE.
Service Desk Updates
Beginning November 4th,
there will be some changes to the service desk schedule. Please let me know if there are any concerns
or recommendations regarding desk coverage.
Thanks.

Walk Arounds
We are continuing to do
regular walk arounds each morning, afternoon and evening, flagging any
unattended items, at tables, carrels and in workrooms. Staff scheduled at the desk are asked to
coordinate the walk arounds during their shifts.
Ethernet Access
HSL does not have any
live Ethernet connections for clients in the library, since wireless access
works well in most locations of the library.
There is also one live connection in 1459, meant to be used by staff
during meetings. ITS does have security concerns
about clients accessing the live network.
UofC students needing direct Ethernet connections may be directed to the
BACS Centre downstairs.
UCIT and EID
A bit more information
regarding UCIT and eID accounts for UofC staff from the IT webpage at: http://www.ucalgary.ca/it/gettingstarted/staff
Online self-registration is required to
obtain an IT Account. Your IT Account will give you access to various online
services, such as the university’s Integrated
Calendar and Email (Outlook) service, Webdisk, AirUC, Files Shares,
SharePoint, and Blackboard.
eID and myUofC
Your eID is used to sign-on to the MyUofC
portal. The myUofC portal is your one-stop access for various online
services at the university. Some of these services include: Enterprise Systems,
Employment Records, and Campus Services.
·
Guest wireless access: eID
·
HSL online room
booking login: UCIT login and password.
·
Remote
access to library resources: UCIT
KRS
·
Outreach: We are
changing the outreach procedures for AHS deliveries to off-site clients. Books from HSL or the HSL hold shelf that are
requested by AHS clients at AHS locations without a KRS library site, will be forwarded
to TBCC KRS site for follow up.
·
AHS
staff email: AHS employees should have an AHS email. At times we get AHS emails bouncing
back. AHS staff emails can be checked in
the AHS Directory by contacting one of the KRS sites. Alison at SHC (403-956-3930) has offered to
verify AHS emails when needed. Thanks Alison! AHS clients can use a personal email in their
Sirsi record if this will work better for their automated notifications.
·
TBCC
and CHR Sirsi profiles: With the introduction of province–wide licensing
of AHS resources, the profiles for CHR and TBCC staff in Sirsi are now the
same.
·
KRS
website Launch: Watch for more details about an official launch
of the KRS website in November
Manual Signouts Slips
Staff are asked to
include relevant information on the manual sign out slips. For example for light bars signed out
manually, please include the light bar #, client name, phone number and date borrowed. Also please ensure that the date returned is
also completed once the light bar is returned to the desk. This will help us keep track of our
inventory. Remember light bars can also
be signed out in Sirsi if clients have a borrower’s card.
Service Area Copier/Printer
The service area staff copier/printer
was giving a network communication error message recently, and could not even
be shut down. We found that unplugging
the power briefly and then restarting resolved the problem. Please give this a try if you encounter a
similar error message.
List Updates in SharePoint
Mailman group lists,
staff contact lists (both work and home), and the staff referral lists have
been updated in SharePoint. TerriLynne
will be added to the staff referral list once training is complete.
Touch Table and LINDSAY
Today the touch table
gave us a message that LINDSAY Virtual Human is now only supported by Chrome or
Safari, so is not currently accessible.
We are following up. The LINDSAY
platform continues to develop with some changes to features and functions. The function icons are now along the top
right hand of the screen.
Windows 7
1.
Greenshot: If you click on the small up arrow along
the bottom right of your desktop, you will see a number of hidden icons
appear. One option is Greenshot that is
a helpful Windows 7 screen capture tool.
You can capture screens, windows, or customized regions. These can be copy and pasted or saved to image
editor program, or sent to printer.
2.
Search: If you open “computer” from the start icon at
the bottom left hand corner of your screen a window displays with your
drives. You will notice a search box on
the upper right hand part of the window that allows you to search either all
drives or the particular drive you are in.
for example if you open the R drive>Health Sciences Library > Uclass,
and then enter a search term, it will search our new UCLASS files for the
term. I’ve had good success with this.
Do others have any
other Windows 7 tips or tricks?
SharePoint
SharePoint is
as our HSL internal staff communication
tool. Two of the advantages of SharePoint are:
1. It is searchable: Looking for information about timesheets? You can enter timesheet in the search field
and it will list all the documents related to timesheets. In this case it
includes the new student handbook that provides info about student timesheets.
2. It is accessible for all HSL
staff (including student assistants) online:
That means you can check schedules, info, etc. online anytime,
anywhere at:: https://spse.ucalgary.ca/sites/HSL/ . Login needs <uc_admin\> before
the UCIT name (login used for U of C email).
Please
let me know if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns.
Mary
