There have been a few questions at the desk regarding the online version of the Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders : DSM-5 / American Psychiatric Association.. Health Sciences Library as well as other locations have does have circulating print copies and there is a print version on our reference shelf.

Knowledge Resource Service does have online access through the PsychiatryOnline database.

E-Books

Many thanks to Leslie Potter and Lynda Shelton for the informative and well-attended e-book session on Friday.

Some highlights:  creating an account with providers such as ebrary of clinical key will allow clients to access more functions and features for using these resources.

For more helpful information  refer to the ebrary  libguide at:  http://libguides.ucalgary.ca/content.php?pid=580853

Also, there is a link for  medical and vet med e-book collections right on our Health Sciences Library homepage:  http://library.ucalgary.ca/hsl

Training card

I have created a training card that I hope will allow access to University of Calgary resources remotely, for example when training on AHS computers.  Please let me know if you have any problems using this card.

Improved Library Access for Sessional Instructors and Post-Docs

A message from Claudette regarding a helpful system change that will improve library access for instructors and post-docs between sessions.

As of March 1, 2014 all Academic staff whose appointment has terminated will receive a grace period when it comes to IT account and system access. Academic staff (including Clinicals, Adjuncts and Sessionals) will now retain their IT accounts for up to one (1) year from their appointment end date.

This will give them continued access to:

               Blackboard - so our Sessional staff can prepare course material in advance of their next session;

               Library - to continue research between appointments, or conclude and move research data;

               Exchange email account;

               Faculty Centre - to finalize grades;

               Basic PeopleSoft (HR and Finance) self service - to allow academics to print pay statements and T4 slips and to complete activities such as expense submissions. Note that the grace period for access to the expense module is limited to 90 days;

               eFIN - to allow researchers to view (only) project

Varidesk

We have a desk add-on at Chelsea’s desk that allows a staff person to move between standing and sitting postures at a workstation.  It is adjustable to 12 heights and is quite easy to manage.

The desk is currently here on trial.  Those interested are welcome to have a look at the Varidesk over the next two weeks.  Some literature about the about the desk is available in our staff room, or online at:  http://www.fitter1.com/

HSL Room Booking system – help

While the HSL room booking system is intended to be a self-serve system for UC clients, with access using their UCIT and password,  there are times when clients encounter login in problems.

We do want our systems to work well for all, and in these cases there are a couple of follow up options for the client.  If there is a login problem, the site will show a pink band across the screen with a link to some troubleshooting help from Paul Pival.  This may help in many cases.  If there are still problems, the best follow up option for the client is to use the Feedback (Zendesk) button on the far right hand side of the screen.   As an exception in these cases staff may wish to book the space on the client behalf while the login issue is investigated.  However we do not wish clients to expect this service on an ongoing basis.  Our preference is to help the client resolve any system issues so that the system will work well for them moving forward,  while still meeting their immediate space needs.

Knowledge Resource Service Bookmarks, Signs and Forms

KRS has updated bookmarks, signs and forms to reflect  changes with the logos.   We have requested an additional supply of the new blue KRS bookmarks for the front counter.

All forms can be found on the shared drive as shown below:

Service Area Printer

We had a question at the desk last week from a client wishing to print documents with stapling and hole punching.  The back-up printer does not provide these options, however she was able to select the staff printer in the service area and select the appropriate properties from her print dialogue box to use both options successfully.

Some Quick Updates

Extended Room Bookings:  Brian and Leslie will now have the ability to create extended room bookings for clients during evenings and weekends.

Commons bookings:  Mary and TerriLynne will be the main contacts now for booking the Commons.   The weeks of June 23 through July 4th as well as the full month of September are tentatively booked for library instruction.  Once instruction dates are confirmed in late June, more space will be released for other clients.

Web sliders:  All staff can create (see SharePoint) and Chelsea is responsible for loading.  Backup needed:

Flat panels:   Brian, Lourdes and Chelsea can load the slides on the flat panel.  Brain is managing the number of slides, and rotation.

Rooms 1453 and 1459:  Will have  back-painted glass boards installed in early April.

Printing:  We now have a replacement printer that will be used until our toner comes in for the new back up printer.

Evacuations:  To avoid the high traffic flow area in the HRIC by the outside doors, our Health Sciences Library evacuation staff meeting place is being moved slightly closer to the HRIC staircase.  Thanks for the great suggestion, Lorraine B..

Photos:  We are looking for staff and Health Sciences Library event photos.  Staff are encouraged to take photos and submit.  They will be displayed on SharePoint and then stored in UCLASS. Chelsea will coordinate the SharePoint photo display and TerriLynne is organizing and tagging photos in UCLASS.

Currents to Backsets:  All 2013 journals are now shelved in the backsets.  Thanks to all who assisted with this project.

Journal Project:    We will begin barcoding journals in preparation for a large move to Health Sciences Library in the summer months.

History of Medicine Room:   New signage for the LeBlanc, Scarlett and Cruse collections has been installed in the History of Medicine Room.  Collections have been shifted slightly to accommodate the LeBlanc collection and the Mackie ephemera collection that are expected soon.
